Jesús Merino's cover art handles both pencils and inks, delivering a confident, layered portrait that makes the sheer scale of this ensemble feel earned rather than crowded. Written by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges with interior art also by Merino, "The Bad Seed, Part 1: Fresh Meat" promises a compelling opening chapter for whatever trials await this storied group.

Flash shows a mysterious black egg to the JSA and Green Lantern determines that it is in fact his son Obsidian, but they are interrupted when the Tapeworm takes hostages and calls out Wildcat to face him. While the rest head out to meet the challenge, Mr. Terrific stays behind, with new recruits All-American Kid and King Chimera, to investigate the egg. The JSA discovers that Tapeworm is not alone, but has a cadre of villains backing him up. As the JSA falls in battle, back at JSA Headquarters a seemingly possessed All-American Kid attacks Mr. Terrific, literally stabbing him in the back.
