Part three of the five-part "Witches" arc arrives in this 2009 Vertigo installment, with a cover by Joao Ruas that's quietly unsettling in the best possible way. A young woman's distressed face stares out from within an oval portrait frame, dark tendrils crawling across her features and small spiders clinging at the edges, while a winged, pallid figure looms ghostlike above. It's the kind of imagery that perfectly captures Fables at its darkest — fairy-tale aesthetics twisted into something genuinely haunting — with Bill Willingham, Mark Buckingham, and Steve Leialoha delivering the storytelling alongside it.
