“The Good Prince Part Two: Forsworn”

Part two of "The Good Prince" arc arrives in this July 2007 Vertigo issue, and James Jean's cover sets an unsettling, painterly tone right away. A winged monkey clutches a dark helmet as it descends through a pale, misty void — a hangman's noose dangling ominously to one side — rendered in Jean's signature muted, dreamlike grays. With Willingham writing and Buckingham and Leialoha on interiors, Fables continues to be one of the most thoughtfully crafted fantasy series of its era.
