Subtitled "When You Need a Hero!", this February 2013 installment of Vertigo's long-running Fables centers on the chapter "A Revolution in Oz: Emperor Bufkin" — and the cover by Joao Ruas delivers the mood perfectly. A massive, regal beast figure dominates the composition, rendered in cool teal tones against radiating amber sunbursts, while a small sword-wielding silhouette stands triumphantly atop his shoulder. It's a striking image of unlikely heroism, and with Bill Willingham writing and Shawn McManus handling art, inks, and colors inside, this is Fables firing on all cylinders.
