Vertigo's acclaimed Fables hits its second chapter with a cover by James Jean that sets a genuinely unsettling tone — a blonde woman in a flowing white gown struggles desperately, her wrists bound, while a menacing bald figure looms behind her and a green-faced figure lurks at the lower corner against a backdrop of fantastical architecture. Bill Willingham's fairy-tale noir series, brought to interior life by Lan Medina and inker Steve Leialoha, promises that the displaced fable characters of New York City are caught up in something far darker than bedtime stories. "Chapter Two: The (Un)usual Suspects" suggests the investigation deepening — and this painted cover makes clear that not everyone in Fabletown is safe.
