Fables #9
This ninth volume of Bill Willingham's acclaimed Vertigo series collects issues #52–59 of the ongoing Fables comic. The story follows the Fable community as they deal with the political fallout from the Adversary's empire, with a focus on the scheming of the sinister Mr. Dark and the introduction of the deadly 'Sons of Empire' plot. Key characters like Bigby Wolf, Snow White, and Prince Charming navigate shifting alliances and escalating threats in this pivotal arc.
In "Sons of Empire, Chapter One: Some Ideas Toward the Project of a Final Solution for Fabletown," the Emperor’s forces plot a decade-long war on the Mundy World using the Four Plagues—Pestilence, Fire, Winter, and Famine. As a traitor is sent from the War Council to Fabletown under the guise of peace, Bigby Wolf turns to a fast rabbit for help training the cubs in the ways of survival. Written by Bill Willingham and illustrated by Mark Buckingham, with inks by Steve Leialoha and Andrew Pepoy, colors by Lee Loughridge, and letters by Todd Klein, this issue’s haunting vision is rendered in stunning detail on the cover by James Jean.
In "Sons of Empire, Chapter Two: The Four Plagues," the Emperor’s War Council unleashes the Four Plagues—Pestilence, Fire, Winter, and Famine—upon the Mundy World in a decade-long campaign of conquest. As a traitor sent from the Council arrives in Fabletown posing as a peace envoy, Bigby Wolf turns to a swift rabbit for help training the cubs in the harsh realities of survival.
In "Sons of Empire, Chapter Three: The Burning Times," the arrival of the Emperor’s ambassador Hansel stirs unease in Fabletown, where his past as a killer of witches comes back to haunt those who remember—especially Frau Totenkinder, the first witch he ever took. As diplomatic tensions simmer, old wounds and hidden fears begin to surface.
In "A Thorn in Their Side?", Kevin Thorne navigates his everyday routine with quiet focus, but beneath the surface, he's quietly gathering clues about the mysterious residents of Bullfinch Street and Kipling Street. The story unfolds with a subtle tension, as ordinary routines mask a deeper curiosity about the hidden lives of those around him.
In "Jiminy Christmas," Bigby Wolf finds himself caught between holiday magic and the quiet weight of old promises as Santa Claus makes a rare visit to Fabletown. With a mix of wonder and urgency, Santa answers Ambrose’s lingering question, restores Flycatcher to humanity—mind and memory whole—and entrusts Bigby with the year’s most sensitive list, just before vanishing into the snow.
