Fables #58
James Jean's cover for this April 2007 Vertigo issue is a breathtaking swirl of steel-blue and coral, dominated by an enormous, brooding giant whose clasped hands anchor a composition alive with flowing waves, scattered white birds, and small figures caught adrift in the current — including a winged fairy-like figure tumbling above and a dark, beast-like figure below. The title "Father and Son Part Two: Big Scary Monsters!" promises something grand in scale, and Jean's artwork delivers that mood immediately, balancing delicacy and dread with remarkable grace. Written by Bill Willingham with interior art by Michael Allred, this issue sits comfortably among Fables' most visually arresting covers of its run.
