Fables #102
Fables #102 kicks off "Super Team," a five-part arc that finds Vertigo's beloved fairy-tale community apparently rallying around a superhero concept — and the cover by Joao Ruas makes that premise visually irresistible. Three overlapping versions of the same young, white-haired girl in a caped "Z"-emblazoned costume are shown: one rendered in full warm color striding forward, one in clean pencil linework, and one in muted grayscale, suggesting a character taking shape at different stages of imagination or creation. The interplay of finished color against sketchy, unresolved drafts gives the whole image a wonderfully thoughtful quality, perfectly suited to a story whose tagline promises that when things are darkest, a super team is exactly what's needed — with the regular creative team of Willingham, Buckingham, and Leialoha delivering the interior pages.
