Sergio Aragonés Groo the Wanderer #29 (1987)
Born on 6 September 1937 in Sant Mateu, Castellón, Spain, Sergio Aragonés Domenech grew up to become one of the most prolific cartoonists in American comics history, equally at home as artist, writer, inker, letterer, and colorist across more than 575 credited issues spanning six decades.
Mad #91 (1964)
Aragonés is best known for two enduring contributions: his long association with *Mad* magazine, where his wordless margin gags became a beloved fixture, and his creation of *Groo the Wanderer*, the disaster-prone barbarian whose misadventures have kept readers laughing across multiple publishers. *Mad* editor Al Feldstein once remarked that Aragonés could have filled the entire magazine on his own — a testament to both his output and his range. Among peers and enthusiasts, he carries the informal title of "the world's fastest cartoonist," a reputation built on his extraordinary ability to generate and execute gags with almost effortless speed.
Leave It to Binky #61 (1968)
Beyond *Mad* and *Groo*, his credits include work on *The Spirit*, *Bat Lash*, and his autobiographical *Sergio Aragonés Funnies*. The Comics Journal has called him "one of the most prolific and brilliant cartoonists of his generation."
House of Mystery #175 (1968)
His trophy shelf reflects that standing: Shazam, Harvey, Inkpot, Reuben, and Eisner Awards, along with a National Cartoonists Society Comic Book Award. In October 2024, he was inducted into the Harvey Awards Hall of Fame.
