Sergio Aragonés's beloved wandering barbarian takes center stage on this 1989 Marvel release, with Groo himself — wide-eyed, gap-toothed, and clutching his sword — glaring out from a circular vignette while a dense crowd of medieval characters fills every inch of the background. It's a cover that captures the essential Groo experience in one glance: one hapless swordsman surrounded by an entire world of trouble, rendered in Aragonés's wonderfully detailed linework. With Aragonés writing and drawing alongside Mark Evanier and colorist Tom Luth, The Groo Chronicles Book 1 is a fine place to dive into the chaotic, comedic adventures of comics' most gloriously disaster-prone warrior.
