Joe Staton is an American comics artist and writer born on January 19, 1948, best remembered for his long, versatile career at DC Comics and his work on the classic newspaper strip *Dick Tracy*. He broke into comics in the early 1970s and built a substantial body of work spanning more than four decades, with credits as artist, inker, letterer, and writer across 732 issues between 1972 and 2020.
All-Star Comics #69 (1977)
Among his most significant contributions are several co-creations for DC: Helena Wayne, the Bronze Age Huntress; Helena Bertinelli, who later carried the Huntress identity; the Green Lantern Corps powerhouse Kilowog; and the alien team the Omega Men. His *Green Lantern* work stands as one of his defining runs, and he also left a mark on titles as varied as *E-Man*, *The Incredible Hulk*, and *Scooby-Doo*. The breadth of those credits reflects a talent equally comfortable with superhero action and all-ages storytelling.

In 2011, Staton took over the storied *Dick Tracy* newspaper strip, a role he held until October 2021. That tenure placed him in a line of artists stretching back decades and introduced his clean, expressive linework to a new generation of readers. His career as a whole represents a steady, craftsman-like commitment to the medium across an impressive range of genres and characters.
