Super Star Comics #8
In "Zone de guerre," Green Lantern Hal Jordan faces a new trial when the Guardians of the Universe, still reeling from the events of Crisis on Infinite Earths, entrust him to a militant minority faction with a radical vision. Written by Steve Englehart and illustrated by Joe Staton, with inks by Bruce Patterson and colors by Anthony Tollin, this 1987 issue explores the psychological toll of Hal’s past—particularly his brain injury in the antimatter universe—through a gritty, character-driven story that redefines his resolve. George Pérez’s striking cover captures the tension of a hero pushed to his limits.

Gardner is granted a ring by a militant minority faction of the Guardians (as seen in Crisis on Infinite Earths (DC, 1985 series) #9). Gardner develops his peculiar attitude problem, presumably a result of his brain injury at Sinestro's hands in the antimatter universe (Green Lantern (DC, 1976 series) #116 and #123) as the Guardians were slowly healing him to full recovery (behind the scenes revealed this issue). Gardner's history is recapped, and he gets his new tough-guy costume.
