Green Lantern #127
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeGreen Lantern #127 holds a firm place in Bronze Age DC history as the first cover work that British artist Brian Bolland produced for an American publisher — a milestone that effectively marked the opening chapter of the so-called 'British Invasion' of U.S. comics. Bolland would go on to become one of DC's most celebrated cover artists and the illustrator of Batman: The Killing Joke, making this issue the ground-zero document of that entire career. The issue also serves as the climax of the three-part 'Power War' arc (issues #125–#127), a story that placed the entire Green Lantern Corps in mortal jeopardy and saw several Lanterns die in battle against the Weaponers of Qward — a level of Corps-wide consequence rare for the era. The cover itself was later reprinted in DC's 2011 hardcover retrospective Cover Story: The DC Comics Art of Brian Bolland, cementing its status as a landmark in the publisher's visual history.
In "Battleground: Oa!", the Guardians of the Universe, trapped within the central Power Battery, rally the Green Lantern Corps to reclaim their home. With Hal Jordan leading the charge, the Corps faces brutal assault from the Weaponers, suffering heavy losses—until even Sinestro, humbled by the enemy's arrogance, turns the tide. Written by Denny O'Neil and illustrated by Joe Staton, with inks by Frank McLaughlin and colors by Anthony Tollin, this pivotal 1980 issue features a striking cover by Brian Bolland.
In "Battleground: Oa!", the imprisoned Guardians of the Universe rally the Green Lantern Corps to rescue Hal Jordan from the central Power Battery, launching a desperate assault on Oa itself. As the Weaponers unleash their fury and several Lanterns fall, even Sinestro—humiliated by the attackers—steps in to aid the Corps in their fight for survival.

The issue was edited by Jack C. Harris with Joe Orlando as managing editor, and went on sale January 22, 1980, carrying a cover date of April 1980. The interior story, 'Battleground: Oa!', was scripted by Denny O'Neil — then the regular writer on the Green Lantern title — and pencilled by Joe Staton with inks by Frank McLaughlin. Bolland's connection to the book came about through a personal encounter: Staton attended a 1979 convention in the UK, stayed with the Bollands while working, and put in a call to editor Harris recommending Bolland — a devoted Green Lantern fan — as a cover artist; Harris agreed, and the result was #127.
