Guy Gardner #11

The issue also sets in motion the creation of Guy Gardner's evil clone — later named Joseph Jones — whose existence as a sleeper agent inside the Justice League became one of the more memorable identity-substitution plots of the early 1990s. As one of three distinct origin retellings of Guy Gardner across different eras of DC continuity, the 'Year One' framing device gave the series a chance to excavate Guy's abusive Baltimore childhood — his alcoholic father Rolly, his overshadowing brother Mace, and his idol General Glory — grounding a character better known for bluster in something genuinely human.

Chuck Dixon took over scripting duties on the title with this issue, replacing Will Jacobs, and collaborated with the series' longtime penciller Joe Staton (inked by Terry Beatty, colored by Anthony Tollin, lettered by Albert De Guzman, and edited by Kevin Dooley with associate editor Eddie Berganza). The cover itself was pencilled by Staton and inked by veteran DC cover artist Dick Giordano. The series had launched in October 1992 as a continuation of the Guy Gardner: Reborn miniseries, with Guy wielding Sinestro's recovered Qwardian yellow ring rather than a Green Lantern ring; by issue #11 the book was still in its pre-Warrior phase, roughly six issues before it would be formally retitled Guy Gardner: Warrior with issue #17.
Trivia · 8 facts
- First appearances of five Green Lantern Corps members: Voz (of Eciram, Sector 2753), Graf Toren (of Karax, Sector 424), RRU-9-2 (a robotic GL, Sector 279), Gpaak (a gelatinous Zoan, Sector 3515), and Bivvix (Sector 3391) — all created by Chuck Dixon and Joe Staton.
- First appearance of Guy Gardner's evil clone, later known as Joseph Jones, whose creation by the alien Draal to act as a sleeper agent on Earth drives the entire 'Yesterday's Sins' four-part arc (issues #11–14).
- The story is formally titled 'Yesterday's Sins, Part 1: Back in the Days,' and is categorized in DC continuity as a Year One narrative, weaving flashbacks to Guy's childhood in Baltimore with the present-day kidnapping plot.
- The Draal targeted Hal Jordan first but diverted to Guy because his Qwardian yellow ring was considered more powerful — a detail that underscores Guy's status as a yellow-ring-wielding outsider rather than a Green Lantern at this point in continuity.
- Guy's parents Roland ('Rolly') Gardner and Peggy Gardner make their first named, depicted appearances in flashback, establishing the canonical backstory of an abusive, alcoholic father who idolized elder son Mace while neglecting Guy.
- The issue also establishes Guy's childhood fixation on the in-universe superhero General Glory, who inspired Guy's distinctive bowl haircut (modeled after Glory's sidekick Ernie).
- Writer Chuck Dixon stepped in with this issue, replacing Will Jacobs; the creative team also included penciller Joe Staton, inker Terry Beatty, colorist Anthony Tollin, letterer Albert De Guzman, and cover inker Dick Giordano.
- An internal continuity error is noted by DC reference sites: Blue Beetle (Ted Kord) is shown in costume in a cameo, when in-story he would not have resumed the costume until after Guy's clone had taken his place in the Justice League.
