“Grownups and Children”

In "Grownups and Children," the Fallen Angels face their most personal trial yet on the strange, alien world of Coconut Grove, where their powers are stripped away and their mutant genes become the target of Unipar’s cruel experiments. With only a cybernetic lobster among them free, Bill takes a stand against Unipar’s forces, sparking a rescue mission that leads to unexpected choices—like freeing Ariel—and a reckoning that reshapes the team’s future. Written by Jo Duffy and illustrated by Joe Staton, with Tony DeZuniga’s inks and Petra Scotese’s colors, this 1987 issue sees the Angels return to Earth, where Sunspot, having learned hard lessons, chooses to rejoin the New Mutants. The cover by Kerry Gammill and Tony DeZuniga captures the moment with sharp, surreal detail.

The Angels have been imprisoned on the world of Coconut Grove and had their powers nullified so Unipar can experiment on them and discover the secrets of their mutant genes. Only one Angel remains free--a cybernetic lobster. Bill takes on Unipar's soldiers and frees his friends. The team even decides to free Ariel. Unipar's plans undone, the Angels return to earth and the Beat Street Club to continue their lives. Realizing that he makes an even worse villain that he did a hero and having learned valuable lessons, Sunspot decides to return to the New Mutants.
