About this Collection

This volume collects issues #7–12 of the 2018 Black Lightning series, continuing the story of Jefferson Pierce as he balances his roles as a teacher, father, and metahuman vigilante. Written by Tony Isabella with art by Clayton Henry, the arc delves into Pierce's past and his ongoing battle against the criminal organization known as the 100.

In "Encounter with a Dark Avenger!", Black Lightning confronts a subway robbery in Suicide Slum, only to see a tragic accident unfold when a robber's shot kills a passenger, Trina. Her grieving boyfriend, Hugh Bryant—Jefferson Pierce’s student—unravels in a shocking transformation, revealing a long-buried alien origin. Written by Denny O'Neil and illustrated by Joe Staton, with inks by Frank Chiaramonte, colors by Jerry Serpe, and letters by Ben Oda, this 2018 issue builds tension with a supernatural twist that challenges both hero and humanity. The cover by Jim Aparo captures the moment of transformation in bold, dynamic lines.

Black Lightning stops a robbery on a subway train as it travels through Suicide Slum but causes one of the robbers to inadvertently shoot and kill another passenger, Trina. This angers Trina's boyfriend, Hugh Bryant, who is also one of Jefferson Pierce's students. Hugh, actually an alien trapped on earth for millions of years, "devolves" into his true form as an energy creature. Black Lightning and Superman subdue the creature and help him finally leave the planet.
