About this Issue

Green Lantern #148 introduced Ch'p of H'lven, the squirrel-like alien Green Lantern of Sector 1014, in a backup story that deliberately pushed against the Corps' default toward humanoid membership — embodying the argument that courage and willpower know no body type. Ch'p went on to play meaningful roles in Crisis on Infinite Earths, the post-Crisis Green Lantern Corps era, and multiple animated adaptations including DC League of Super-Pets (2022), making this issue the origin point of one of the franchise's most enduring non-humanoid characters. The issue also marks the very first installment of the ongoing 'Tales of the Green Lantern Corps' backup feature within the monthly title, a format that expanded the Corps' universe considerably throughout the early 1980s. Decades later, a reference to a 'squirrel' Lantern in the trailer for the HBO Max series Lanterns (2026) renewed widespread collector and fan interest in this issue.

History

The main story, 'Beware My Power!', was written by Marv Wolfman with pencils by Don Newton and Joe Staton, and edited by Dave Manak; it involves Ungarans — natives of Abin Sur's homeworld — kidnapping Hal Jordan and setting up a confrontation with the Guardians over his perceived negligence. The backup, which inaugurated the 'Tales of the Green Lantern Corps' ongoing feature, was scripted by Paul Kupperberg and drawn by Don Newton (inked by Dan Adkins), with Kupperberg later recalling that editor Dave Manak assigned Newton to the script essentially by chance — a lucky pairing that produced Ch'p's debut. Kupperberg has stated publicly on his own website that Ch'p was conceived as a genuinely serious, formidable hero rather than comic relief, a creative intent that later artists and editors did not always honor.
