Green Lantern #188
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeGreen Lantern #188 is a double-header of genuine creative ambition: the lead story marks the moment John Stewart publicly revealed his identity as Green Lantern — a rare, politically charged act rooted in his belief that openly being a Black superhero could serve as a positive example to his community. The backup, 'Mogo Doesn't Socialize,' introduced one of the most conceptually audacious characters in DC history — Mogo, a sentient planet who is himself a Green Lantern — in only six pages, written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons barely a year before they would begin Watchmen together. Mogo evolved from a witty one-off twist ending into a structural pillar of the Green Lantern mythos, eventually revealed as the entity responsible for guiding power rings to new wielders across the universe. The issue also marks the first appearances of the villain Bolphunga the Unrelenting, and the debut of Leezle Pon and Dkrtzy Rrr as named (if unseen) Corps members, dramatically expanding the imaginative range of what a Green Lantern could be.

The issue shipped to direct-market retailers on January 29, 1985, with a cover date of May 1985, under editor Andy Helfer and managing editor Tom Condon. The lead story, 'Decent Exposure,' was part of Steve Englehart's incoming run on the title — a run that centered John Stewart rather than Hal Jordan at a time when Jordan had retired from the Corps — with pencils by Joe Staton and inks by Bruce Patterson. The backup slot was occupied by a 'Tales of the Green Lantern Corps' feature that DC used to showcase outside talent; Moore and Gibbons delivered 'Mogo Doesn't Socialize,' a story that Moore has described as an exercise in exploring how far the concept of a Green Lantern could be stretched beyond the humanoid. The issue also includes a one-page text piece by Dick Giordano and a letters column that included a contribution from a then-unknown Kevin J. Dooley, who would later become an editor at DC.
