Green Lantern (Vol. 3) #12 marks the debut of Brik, the silicon-based Green Lantern of Sector 904 from the planet Dryad — one of the earliest and most distinctive new Corps members introduced during Gerard Jones's ambitious reconstruction of the Green Lantern mythology in the early 1990s. Her creation reflected the era's push toward a genuinely alien, cosmically diverse Corps rather than a roster of humanoid stand-ins. The issue also serves as the payoff of the 'A Guy and His G'nort' four-parter, the first extended solo spotlight for Guy Gardner in Volume 3, cementing his comedic-yet-capable personality as a counterweight to Hal Jordan's straight-arrow heroism. Within the larger Jones run, it closes a deliberate character-by-character rebuilding project that would lay the narrative groundwork for everything from the Mosaic spin-off to the eventual, tragic fall of Hal Jordan.

History

Volume 3 of Green Lantern launched in 1990 on the heels of the Emerald Dawn miniseries and was written throughout its early phase by Gerard Jones, who had co-written that origin retcon. Issues 9 through 12 were designed as a four-chapter Guy Gardner showcase — a tonal counterpoint to the grander Hal Jordan reconstructions that bookended it — with Jones working alongside his regular artistic collaborator Joe Staton. For issue #12's conclusion, the inking duties shifted from Bruce Patterson to Pablo Marcos, with Andrew Helfer and Kevin Dooley sharing editorial duties under Executive Editor Dick Giordano. Sequart has noted that Jones used these early arcs to systematically and quite deliberately rebuild each major Green Lantern character before expanding the title's scope into a full family of books.

Guy Gardner's willpower-through-pain escape from Anti-Oan energy restraints, and his subsequent grudging respect for G'nort, represents a character-defining moment for Gardner that writers would continue to reference in his solo appearances.
