Dan Adkins was an American illustrator whose career spanned comic books and science-fiction magazines across several decades. Born Danny L. Adkins on March 15, 1937, he passed away on May 3, 2013.
Adkins built a substantial body of work that touched on some of the most recognizable titles in mainstream comics, with credits as artist, inker, colorist, and writer across hundreds of issues. His range was genuinely broad — from superhero fare like Superman, Detective Comics, and The Avengers to sword-and-sorcery material including Conan the Barbarian, as well as the spy-action anthology T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents. That kind of versatility across genres made him a reliable and frequently sought presence in the industry during his most active years, beginning in the mid-1960s.
While Adkins may be less immediately recognizable to casual readers than some of his contemporaries, his sheer volume of credited work — over 650 issues — reflects a career built on consistent craft rather than intermittent splashes. His contributions as an inker in particular helped define the finished look of pages that went on to become well-regarded chapters in comics history. He remains a figure whose behind-the-scenes influence rewards closer examination by anyone interested in how Silver and Bronze Age comics actually got made.
