About this Collection

Lost Marvels No. 1: Tower of Shadows marks the first time Marvel's 1969 supernatural horror anthology series has ever been gathered under one cover, closing a decades-long gap in the published record of the Silver Age. The collection is significant not just as an archival rescue but as a proof of concept: it inaugurates a formal, ongoing partnership between Fantagraphics — the premier American publisher of serious comics scholarship — and Marvel, an alliance with no real precedent in mainstream comics publishing. Because Tower of Shadows represented Marvel's deliberate push back into EC-style horror territory at a moment when the Comics Code Authority's grip on the genre was finally loosening, the volume also documents a pivotal inflection point in the medium's relationship with censorship and creative freedom. For readers and scholars alike, it places a completely 'lost' body of work — produced by an extraordinary cross-section of the Marvel Bullpen at the height of their individual powers — back into the conversation where it belongs.

In "At the Stroke of Midnight!", a professor journeys to a haunted British town to investigate the Wollaston Curse—a dark legacy tied to a murdered gypsy girl and a bloodline doomed to destruction by hate. As he explores the ruins of the Wollaston manor with a woman who plans to kill him, the curse claims her instead, weaving her fate into the very stones of the estate. Written by Allyn Brodsky and illustrated by Barry Smith with contributions from Herb Trimpe, this eerie tale unfolds with haunting art and a chilling premise, all rendered in a striking cover by Jim Steranko, George Tuska, Neal Adams, Wally Wood, and Barry Windsor-Smith.

History

Tower of Shadows debuted in September 1969 as Marvel's answer to DC's successful House of Mystery and House of Secrets anthologies, arriving at a moment when the Comics Code Authority's unofficial relaxation of its horror prohibitions gave publishers a narrow new opening. Despite a roster that reads like a who's-who of the era, the series sold poorly — constrained in part by Marvel's strict distribution limit on the number of monthly titles it could ship — and was repurposed after its ninth original issue, eventually rebranded as Creatures on the Loose. The 2025 Fantagraphics hardcover grew out of publisher Gary Groth's recognition that Marvel had produced a substantial body of non-superhero work in the 1960s–80s that had essentially vanished from the historical record, and the Lost Marvels imprint — collaboratively produced with Marvel — was conceived as a curated, archivally rigorous remedy. Comics journalist Michael Dean edited the volume, contributing historical background and contextual analysis, and the collection was featured on NPR's Weekend Edition, an unusually mainstream platform for a comics reprint.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Published April 29, 2025, by Fantagraphics in collaboration with Marvel Comics — the first volume in the ongoing Lost Marvels hardcover reprint series.
  • Collects all nine original issues of Marvel's Tower of Shadows anthology (1969), the first time the complete run has ever appeared in a single collected edition.
  • Tower of Shadows launched in 1969 as Marvel's EC-style supernatural horror anthology — a genre the Comics Code Authority had effectively banned since the 1950s — and ran for nine issues of original content before being retitled Creatures on the Loose.
  • Contributor roster across the nine collected issues includes Neal Adams, Jim Steranko, Barry Windsor-Smith, John Buscema, Gene Colan, Wally Wood, Stan Lee, Roy Thomas, John Romita, Johnny Craig, Marie Severin, Gerry Conway, and Bernie Wrightson.
  • The premiere issue of Tower of Shadows (Sept. 1969) featured Jim Steranko's story 'At the Stroke of Midnight,' which won a 1969 Alley Award for Best Feature Story; editorial conflict over that story led directly to Steranko's departure from Marvel as a regular freelancer.
  • The series used EC-style ghoulish hosts — a gravedigger named Digger and an undertaker named Headstone P. Gravely — framing devices that became a template for Marvel's later horror anthology books.
  • Volume includes new historical background and analysis written by comics journalist Michael Dean, who also discussed the collection and its Comics Code context on NPR's Weekend Edition.
  • Lost Marvels No. 1 is the inaugural entry in a planned multi-volume series; subsequent 2025 releases include No. 2 (Howard Chaykin's Dominic Fortune, Monark Starstalker, and Phantom Eagle) and No. 3 (Savage Tales of the 1980s), with additional volumes planned beyond 2025.
