Avengers #147 is the narrative and dramatic centerpiece of Steve Englehart and George Pérez's celebrated 'Serpent Crown Saga,' transplanting the Avengers wholesale onto Earth-712 — the alternate world of the Squadron Supreme — and using that setting to land pointed political satire: a sitting real-world figure, Nelson Rockefeller (then U.S. Vice President), appears as president of the alternate Earth, corrupted by the Serpent Crown. The story title 'Crisis on Other-Earth!' is a direct homage to the Silver Age Justice League cross-dimensional team-up format, cementing the Squadron Supreme's identity as Marvel's transparent JLA pastiche and laying the imaginative groundwork that would eventually lead to Mark Gruenwald's landmark 1985 Squadron Supreme limited series. Within the issue, Englehart also delivers one of the most widely cited Vision solo showcases of the Bronze Age, using the synthezoid's density-manipulation in a way no writer had before — a character beat that resonated strongly enough to be revisited in the Vision & Scarlet Witch maxi-series years later.

History

The story was the continuation of an arc Englehart and Pérez had launched in Avengers #141, but the saga suffered a significant production disruption: a two-issue fill-in by Tony Isabella and Don Heck (issues #145–146) bumped 'Crisis on Other-Earth!' out of its originally planned slot, delaying it two months to the February 1976 on-sale date (cover-dated May 1976). According to later published accounts, both halves of the Squadron Supreme story had originally been slated for the now-cancelled Giant-Size Avengers #5, a plan derailed when Marvel phased out its line of giant-sized comics in mid-1975. The issue was edited by Marv Wolfman, with interior lettering split between Gaspar Saladino (page one) and Denise Wohl, and features a cover by Rich Buckler and Dan Adkins that — perhaps owing to the production shuffle — incorrectly labels the Squadron Supreme as the 'Squadron Sinister' in its cover copy.
