Action Comics #529
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThe cover of this March 1982 issue sets up a genuinely unsettling mystery: Superman soars over a city street while Lois Lane, watching from a nearby monorail car, urges him to stop an erupting volcano below — yet the Man of Steel replies that he sees nothing but a quiet street scene. That chilling disconnect, dramatized in a single image by penciler George Pérez and inker Dick Giordano, is reinforced by the bold tagline declaring Earth is "Target for Destruction" and that everyone knows it but Superman. Rounding out the package, Aquaman gets his own "Action-Plus" spotlight in the corner, making this a satisfying double-feature from Marv Wolfman, Curt Swan, and company.

Superman awakes in Metropolis, but has no idea where he has been. Worse, natural disasters are springing up everywhere, and he literally can't see them. The reformed Brainiac returns to Earth and helps Superman recover his senses, and the two plan on how to stop the machine of destruction on the way to Earth. They realize that only by making Brainiac evil again can they stop the deadly device.
