“The Lurker Within”

In "The Lurker Within," Conan finds himself entangled in a deadly mystery after rescuing Lady Aztrias of Numalia from a pack of wolves. She hires him to steal a mysterious bowl from the wealthy merchant Kallian—only for Conan to discover the bowl empty and Kallian dead, with the city guard closing in and Aztrias accusing him of murder. The true threat lies within the bowl: a serpent-man, a monstrous being with a human head and the body of a serpent, whose presence awakens ancient horrors. Written by Roy Thomas and Robert E. Howard, with art by Barry Smith and inks by Buscema and Dan Adkins, this tale of ancient sorcery and perilous deception is brought to life in a striking cover by Barry Windsor-Smith.

Conan saves Lady Aztrias of Numalia from a pack of wolves. She hires Conan to steal from the wealthy merchant Kallian, who temporarily houses a mysterious bowl from Stygia, said to contain a great treasure. Conan burgles the merchant's house, finds the bowl empty and Kallian dead. The city guard appears and Lady Aztrias accuses him of killing Kallian. The real killer was in the bowl, however: a serpent-man, a big snake with a human head. Conan kills the sepent-man and saves Demetrio. In a vision, Conan sees the Stygian sorcerer Thoth-Amon.
