Captain Marvel #17
The cover of this October 1969 issue declares Captain Marvel "Unchained!" — and the artwork by Gil Kane and Dan Adkins makes the case convincingly, with a newly redesigned Mar-Vell dominating the image in his striking red-and-blue costume, energy crackling around his fists as both Captain America and a masked figure are sent reeling. Roy Thomas scripts the interior tale, "And a Child Shall Lead You!", promising the kind of cosmic-meets-street-level Marvel storytelling that made this era so compelling. A fine snapshot of Captain Marvel's bold reinvention at the tail end of the 1960s.
