Conan räddar adelsdamen Aztrias av Numalia från vargar. Hon lejer Conan att stjäla en skatt från den rike handelsmannen Kallian, som tillfälligt har hand om en mystisk skål från Stygia, som sägs innehålla en ovärderlig skatt. Conan bryter sig in i handelsmannens hus, finner skålen tom och Kallian död. Stadsvakten dyker upp och Aztrias anklagar honom för att ha mördat Kallian. Den verkliga mördaren fanns dock i skålen: en reptilman, en jätteorm med människohuvud. Conan dödar reptilmannen och räddar Demetrio. I en syn ser han därefter den stygiske trollkarlen Thoth-Amon.
