Alex Ross

Nelson Alexander Ross was born on January 22, 1970, and has built one of the most distinctive visual identities in American comics through his meticulous painted artwork. Working primarily in gouache and wash, his style draws frequent comparisons to Norman Rockwell filtered through the kinetic superhero sensibility of George Pérez — an approach that renders classic comic book characters with an unusual grounding in human physicality and expression.

Ross first attracted wide attention with the 1994 Marvel miniseries *Marvels*, a collaboration with writer Kurt Busiek that reimagined the Marvel Universe through an ordinary citizen's eyes. The partnership proved enduring; Ross has contributed covers and character designs to Busiek's long-running series *Astro City* as well. His next landmark project, the 1996 DC miniseries *Kingdom Come*, saw him step into a co-writing role alongside writer Mark Waid, expanding his creative reach beyond illustration. Among his most-credited works across more than 600 issues are *Justice*, *Earth X*, *Paradise X*, and *Justice Society of America*, with additional projects for Dynamite Entertainment.

His reach extends beyond comics into film concept art for the first two Sam Raimi *Spider-Man* pictures, DVD packaging for M. Night Shyamalan's *Unbreakable*, promotional artwork for the Academy Awards, and *TV Guide* covers. His superhero renditions have even been adapted into merchandise. Notably, the distinctive habit of his figures gazing into the middle distance has earned him the rare distinction of being satirized in *Mad* magazine.
