Red Sonja #1
This volume launches the 2006 Dynamite Entertainment series, collecting the first story arc that re-establishes Red Sonja's place in the Hyborian Age. Written by Michael Avon Oeming and illustrated by Mel Rubi, it follows the She-Devil with a Sword as she confronts a dark conspiracy involving a stolen artifact and a resurrected sorcerer, setting the tone for her modern adventures.
In "The Message," Red Sonja takes on a perilous journey after rescuing a dying messenger from a brutal attack. When the man succumbs to tainted water en route to the walled city of Gathia, Sonja vows to deliver his urgent message—though the people there are far from welcoming to the grim tidings she carries.
In "The Flaming Skulls," Red Sonja finds herself hunted through the treacherous streets of Gathia after delivering grim tidings. Escaping into a deadly pit, she must battle an undefeated ogre, only to be captured and deemed a prophesied sacrifice by the high priest Fa. As he prepares her for ritual execution under the gaze of the enigmatic Celestial One, Fa’s true intentions begin to stir—though his plans remain shrouded in shadow.
In "Life & Death," Jo awakens to find herself alive after what should have been a fatal wound, brought to a hidden camp by Fa, who reveals she must return a magic dagger to an idol in the city of Gathia before the injury becomes permanent. With four other warriors, she infiltrates the city under cover of night, facing danger and betrayal within their own ranks. As the mission unfolds, only Jo and Osin remain to carry the burden of survival—only to face a new threat as they flee back to Fa, pursued by the savage tribes of Zedda.
In "Tide Turns," Red Sonja and Osin answer a desperate call from the Zedda, whose villages have been drowned by the Celestial One’s wrath. As the Zedda reluctantly accept a woman’s leadership, Sonja, Osin, and the warrior Borg infiltrate the lower levels of Gathia’s fortress, where they face a terrifying ambush among the ruins.
In "Tower of Blood," Red Sonja, Osin, and Borg ascend the cursed spire of Gathia, battling demonic children, a colossal serpent, and relentless soldiers as they climb toward an unknown fate. Each step brings them closer to the tower’s heart, where Sonja must confront the terrifying presence known as The Celestial One.
In "Falling Star," Red Sonja and the enigmatic Osin confront the terrifying Celestial One atop Gathia’s tower, only to discover he was once one of the Zedda—now a fallen god of war. As Fa’s brutal campaign for control spirals into chaos, Sonja is left questioning whether victory has truly been won, as the city burns and the cost of power becomes all too clear.
