Mike Mignola is an American comic book writer and artist born on September 16, 1960, who has spent more than four decades shaping the medium across both mainstream superhero titles and creator-owned supernatural fiction. He broke into the industry in the early 1980s, accumulating credits as writer, artist, inker, colorist, and letterer on nearly 700 issues between 1983 and the present day. Early in his career he contributed to established titles such as Alpha Flight, building the craft that would later define his distinctive visual sensibility — heavy shadows, architectural ruin, and a folklore-drenched atmosphere that sits somewhere between pulp adventure and European horror.

His defining achievement is Hellboy, the cigar-chomping paranormal investigator published through Dark Horse Comics, which Mignola launched and has continued to develop across multiple connected series. The character anchors a richly detailed shared universe encompassing B.P.R.D., B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth, Abe Sapien, Lobster Johnson, and Hellboy in Hell, among other spin-offs. Beyond that universe, Mignola has co-created additional supernatural titles for Dark Horse, including Baltimore, Joe Golem, and The Amazing Screw-On Head. His work across these projects has made him one of the more recognizable and influential voices in American genre comics, celebrated for building a coherent mythology from occult history, Lovecraftian dread, and deadpan wit.
