Hellboy in Hell #5
The fifth chapter of Mike Mignola's Hellboy in Hell carries the subtitle "The Three Gold Whips," and the cover sets an appropriately somber mood — Hellboy stands amid a crumbling graveyard, his tattered coat hanging loose, while a looming stone angel statue and scattered headstones surround him in Dave Stewart's deep, atmospheric blues and purples. A small skull figure crouches near his feet, and drifting leaves add a quiet unease to the scene. Mignola's stark linework and Stewart's moody palette make this one of the more contemplative images in the series, perfectly suited to Hell's strange, melancholy terrain.
