B.P.R.D.: Garden of Souls #1 opens the five-issue miniseries that finally delivers on a mystery seeded across the entire run of B.P.R.D. up to that point — the full origin of Abe Sapien as Dr. Langdon Everett Caul, Victorian scientist and member of the occult Oannes Society. The arc also marks the debut of Panya, an ageless ancient Egyptian mummy who would become one of the most consequential recurring figures in the Mignolaverse for years to come. The miniseries was written by Mike Mignola and his B.P.R.D. co-writer John Arcudi, with interior art and covers by Guy Davis, and colors by longtime Mignolaverse collaborator Dave Stewart — the same core creative team that had been building the B.P.R.D. monthly since its earliest arcs. The five issues ran from March to July 2007 under Dark Horse Comics, functioning as the seventh major story arc in the B.P.R.D. line and slotting into the sprawling 'Plague of Frogs' continuity. The trade paperback collection (January 2008) included an extensive gallery of original Davis concept sketches, one of the most substantial bonus art sections in any B.P.R.D. volume to that point.
