“Hidden Depths”

The fourth chapter of the "…beyond the sea…" miniseries wraps up with a cover by Mike Mignola that is pure atmospheric dread — Deadman's pale, gaunt figure drifts in a sea of crimson, surrounded by scattered skulls, bones, and a pair of lurking fish that hint at something waiting in the deep. The stark red-and-black palette and Mignola's bold, shadow-heavy linework give Boston Brand an eerie gravitas that feels perfectly suited to a ghost adrift between worlds. With Vance, Beroy, and Green handling the interior story "Hidden Depths," this 2002 finale is a moody, satisfying close to a miniseries that wasn't afraid to take DC's restless spirit somewhere genuinely unsettling.
