Abe Sapien: The Drowning #2
Part two of "The Drowning" arrives with a cover that stops you cold: Abe Sapien is suspended helplessly, his aquatic frame pierced by a cluster of blades while droplets of blood fall onto a grimacing, serpentine creature lurking below — a small, ominous card bearing a moth symbol connecting the two figures in unsettling fashion. Mike Mignola's cover art, rendered in his signature muted palette of blacks and grays with spare flashes of red, conveys dread and vulnerability with remarkable economy. Jason Shawn Alexander handles the interior art, making this 2008 Dark Horse miniseries a compelling showcase for two distinct but complementary visual sensibilities.
