Hellboy: Seed of Destruction #1

History

Before Hellboy, Mike Mignola had spent his career doing work-for-hire illustration at Marvel and DC, feeling creatively constrained; Hellboy was his escape into a self-directed project rooted in his personal passions for folklore, Lovecraftian horror, and pulp adventure. Not yet fully confident in his scripting abilities at the time, Mignola plotted the story himself but brought in veteran writer John Byrne to handle the dialogue — the same collaborator who had recently given the character his first nationally distributed comics appearance in Next Men #21 (December 1993). Mignola chose Dark Horse as his home specifically because of the publisher's commitment to creator ownership, joining a cohort of established talent — including Frank Miller, Art Adams, and John Byrne — who were building the Dark Horse Legends imprint on those terms. The issue was edited by Barbara Kesel and colored by Mark Chiarello, and it carried a March 1994 cover date; Mignola initially conceived the miniseries as a one-and-done story, but its immediate success prompted an entire expanding universe of sequels and spinoffs.
