The Spectre #8

Mike Mignola's cover for this November 1987 issue is a striking tableau of supernatural menace: a dark, bat-masked figure in red and black looms triumphantly overhead, clutching a gleaming sword, while the white-and-green costumed Spectre is pinned beneath rocky debris, skull-strewn rubble and crackling yellow lightning filling the hellish background. The image radiates a genuine sense of cosmic struggle, with the defeated Spectre reaching upward against an adversary who radiates genuine malevolence. Written by Doug Moench with interior art by Cam Kennedy, "Armed Against Evil" promises exactly the kind of occult confrontation this series does so well.
