Batman: Legends of the Dark Knight #54

Mike Mignola's cover for "Sanctum" is a striking vision in deep crimson — Batman silhouetted against a blazing red sky, his cape spread wide while a mass of skeletal figures crowds around him below, and a coiling, tentacled creature looms ominously in the background. The atmosphere is pure gothic dread, with Mignola's signature shadows and bone-dry linework giving Gotham's Dark Knight a mythic, almost ritualistic weight. Written and illustrated by Mignola alongside Dan Raspler, this November 1993 issue of Legends of the Dark Knight promises something far darker and stranger than the average Batman yarn.
