1985: The BPRD has dispatched Hellboy to France after the abduction of a Zinco-Davis executive's teenage daughter. He finds her at the center of a ritual summoning Asmodeus and takes her to apparent sanctuary amid the ruins of a chapel honoring St. Hagan, a Crusader whose legend is related there by an old monk. The monk and Asmodeus then tell the girl and Hellboy, respectively, the tale of Asmodeus' brief usurpation of King Solomon's throne in Jerusalem.
