B.U.A.P. #1 (2005), published by Cross Cult, features the story "Hohle Erde" and brings together a collaborative writing effort by Mike Mignola, Christopher Golden, Tom Sniegoski, Michael Groenewald, and Gunther Nickel, with artwork by Ryan Sook and inking by Ryan Sook and Curtis Arnold, and lettering by Amigo Grafik. The cover, credited to Mike Mignola for both pencils and inks, sets a distinctive tone for the issue.
In "Hohle Erde," Abe Sapien is haunted by a vision of Liz Sherman in distress, prompting the BPRD to dispatch a team led by new recruit Johann Kraus to a remote Arctic monastery. What begins as a search for a missing agent quickly deepens into something far stranger, as the frozen landscape holds secrets older than memory.
In "Die Trommeln der Toten," Abe Sapien and the psychic Garrett Omatta are dispatched by the B.P.R.D. to investigate a series of unexplained shark attacks and eerie possession-like incidents aboard a vessel sailing the forgotten routes of the slave trade. As the ship's dark history begins to surface, the two men must navigate a growing sense of dread tied to the sea and the whispers of the past.
