The centerpiece tale follows an unlikely alliance between the Sorcerer Supreme and the monarch of Latveria as they journey into Hell to rescue Doom's mother, Cynthia von Doom, from the demon Mephisto. The volume also includes early Mignola artwork and supplementary material that deepens the conflict between magic and science, and the complex history of these two iconic Marvel characters.
In "Triumph and Torment," Dr. Strange faces an unexpected crisis when the sudden departure of his disciple Clea sends a wave of mystical hopefuls flocking to the Sanctum. As Strange rejects the overtures of Jimaine Szardos, her formidable mother takes offense—and the resulting magical clash threatens to unravel the balance of the mystical realm. Written by Roger Stern and illustrated with striking detail by Kevin Nowlan, with inks by Terry Austin, colors by Bob Sharen, and letters by Jim Novak, this 2013 Marvel issue features a cover by Mike Mignola.
