Ernesto Chan — widely known as Ernie Chan, and early in his career sometimes credited as Ernie Chua — was a Filipino-American comics artist born on July 27, 1940, who became one of the more distinctive presences in American genre comics during the 1970s and beyond. He passed away on May 16, 2012.
Teen Titans #43 (1973)
Chan built his reputation largely outside the superhero mainstream, gravitating toward horror, war, and sword-and-sorcery material with a naturalistic draftsmanship well-suited to gritty, muscular storytelling. His most sustained body of work centered on Robert E. Howard's Conan, contributing across multiple Marvel series — including *Conan the Barbarian* and *The Savage Sword of Conan* — over a career spanning roughly five decades and touching more than 680 credited issues as artist, inker, colorist, and occasionally writer.
Ghosts #14 (1973)
Beyond the Hyborian Age, Chan maintained a long association with DC Comics' Batman franchise, working on both *Batman* and *Detective Comics* in a tenure that stood somewhat apart from his otherwise genre-focused output. His ability to bring weight and atmosphere to non-powered characters gave his pages a texture that distinguished them from shinier superhero fare. The breadth of his catalog — with *Conan* titles appearing in English, Spanish, and French editions — speaks to the international reach his work ultimately achieved.
