About this Issue

Marvel Comics Presents #65 is the first appearance — albeit in silhouette — of Sean Watanabe (Brass) and his sister Emmaline Watanabe, two supporting characters created by Howard Mackie and Mark Texeira who would remain entwined with the Danny Ketch Ghost Rider mythos throughout the early 1990s. The issue also serves as a pivotal installment of the 'Acts of Vengeance' crossover as it filtered through the anthology format, pairing Wolverine and the freshly launched Danny Ketch Ghost Rider in a Brooklyn-set confrontation with Deathwatch's ninja operatives — an early showcase for the chemistry between two of Marvel's most commercially important characters of the decade. Alongside those superhero firsts, Steve Gerber's ongoing Poison serial and a Starfox solo chapter demonstrate how the MCP anthology was simultaneously functioning as an incubator for street-level crime drama and lighter cosmic fare within the same stapled package.

History

Marvel Comics Presents was Marvel's weekly/biweekly anthology vehicle launched in 1988, designed to give multiple characters serialized eight-page chapters per issue under one cover. Issue #65, cover-dated December 1990 with a cover by Dave Ross, falls squarely in the period when editor Terry Kavanagh (assisted by Kelly Corvese) and Editor-in-Chief Tom DeFalco were using the book to extend the reach of the Acts of Vengeance crossover event and to support the red-hot new Ghost Rider series helmed by Howard Mackie. Mackie and penciller Mark Texeira, the same creative team building the Danny Ketch solo title, continued their collaborative run directly into the MCP anthology arc, giving the lead story a visual consistency with the ongoing Ghost Rider series.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance (in silhouette/cameo) of Brass (Sean Watanabe), a former Navy SEAL with low-level telepathy, created by Howard Mackie and Mark Texeira; his first fully-seen appearance is debated as either MCP #65 or MCP #67.
  • First appearance of Emmaline Watanabe, Sean's sister, who is kidnapped by Deathwatch's ninjas in this issue — the central event of the 'Acts of Vengeance Part 2: Claw and Chain' chapter.
  • Lead story 'Acts of Vengeance Part 2: Claw and Chain' is written by Howard Mackie with pencils by Mark Texeira and inks by Harry Candelario — the same core team behind the concurrent Ghost Rider vol. 3 ongoing series.
  • The Wolverine/Ghost Rider arc in MCP #64–71 is collected and referenced under the title 'Wolverine and Ghost Rider in Acts of Vengeance,' tying the anthology story to the broader 1989–1990 Marvel crossover event.
  • Second story, 'Vandals of the Heart Part 6: Reparation,' continues Steve Gerber's serialized Poison (Cecilia Cardinale) feature, with art by Cynthia Martin; Slug (Ulysses Lugman) is listed among the antagonists.
  • Third story, 'Dark Dimensions Part 2: The Interview,' features the Fantastic Four (including Invisible Woman/Sue Richards) written by Robert Denatale with art by Tom Morgan.
  • Fourth story, 'Wang Dang Doodle,' is a standalone Starfox (Eros) chapter written by Peter Gillis with pencils by Ernie Chan and inks by Jeff Albrecht.
  • The issue was edited by Terry Kavanagh (with Kelly Corvese as assistant editor) under Editor-in-Chief Tom DeFalco, and was available in both direct-edition and newsstand formats.
