“Black Knights”

Ernie Chan's dynamic cover for this 1978 Marvel issue says it all: Shang-Chi, red headband flying, battles a green-robed opponent while a snarling black panther leaps from the shadows above — and a blue-clad blonde woman with a whip, identified as Pavane, closes in from the right. The cover copy poses the deadly dilemma perfectly: the lady or the tiger, and either way it spells death for the Master of Kung Fu. Inside, Doug Moench's script and Jim Craig's art bring the story "Black Knights" to life in what was clearly one of the series' most tension-packed issues of its era.
