Fuyant vers le sud après une bataille perdue, les quatre mercenaires sont accueillis dans un village. Le village travaille tout l'été pour produire suffisamment de céréales pour nourrir le seigneur de guerre Wonangus et ses troupes lorsqu'ils logent avec eux pour l'hiver. Conan et ses camarades acceptent de repousser Wonangus et de libérer le village.
