“Call It Thunder!”

Few comics from 1977 deliver a premise as deliriously inventive as this one — the cover copy announces "2000 feet above modern-day London, Shang-Chi duels a killer from the past," and the image delivers every bit of that promise. Shang-Chi clings barefoot to the wing of a red WWI-era biplane, delivering a powerful kick while a goggled pilot fires a pistol back at him, London's rooftops visible far below. Dave Cockrum's pencils and Ernie Chan's inks give the whole scene terrific kinetic energy, making "Rage of the Red Baron!" feel like a genuine clash between eras.
