Born on 24 June 1961, Peter Milligan is a British comic book writer whose career spans both sides of the Atlantic and touches virtually every corner of the medium's mainstream and alternative spaces. He came up through the UK anthology scene, contributing to stalwart titles such as 2000 AD and Eagle while also helping launch the magazine Deadline and writing for Revolver and A1.
2000 AD #500 (1986)
His American work brought him to wider prominence, particularly through DC Comics' Vertigo imprint, where he revitalized existing properties and built original worlds. His long-running reinvention of Shade, the Changing Man and his psychologically sharp take on Human Target demonstrated a consistent interest in identity and transformation. A four-year tenure on Hellblazer added another significant chapter to that title's history, and original Vertigo series such as Enigma, The Extremist, Egypt, and Greek Street showed his range across tone and genre.
2000 AD #576 (1988)
At Marvel, Milligan co-created X-Statix alongside artist Mike Allred, a satirical superhero series that stood apart from the era's mainstream output through its media-savvy irreverence. Across a credited run of over 600 issues stretching from 1984 into the mid-2020s, he also contributed substantially to titles including X-Men and Red Lanterns. Milligan's body of work is notable for its willingness to use genre frameworks as vehicles for genuine psychological and social inquiry, earning him a reputation as one of the more intellectually ambitious writers of his generation.
