The fourth chapter of DC/Vertigo's unsettling 1993 miniseries, Enigma poses its central question right on the cover: "…and then what?" Duncan Fegredo's striking cover juxtaposes a warmly rendered human profile against a cool, blank white mask, with a smaller inset panel rendered in stark ink lines showing a distressed face and a vivid green serpent — an image that feels pulled from nightmare. Peter Milligan and Fegredo, with colors by Sherilyn Van Valkenburgh, were crafting something genuinely different from Vertigo's 1993 lineup, and this issue's cover alone radiates that sense of quiet, unsettling purpose.
