Shade, the Changing Man #66

Part two of "The Roots of Madness" arrives in this late-1995 DC Vertigo entry, and Duncan Fegredo's cover makes an immediate impression: a vivid, unsettling hybrid figure — its body draped in a psychedelic, eye-patterned cloak of madness-vest fabric — rises from a swamp, topped by a snarling alligator head with red-spiked scales and fierce amber eyes. Lush bayou vegetation and murky water frame the creature, setting a mood that feels genuinely strange and Southern-Gothic at once. Peter Milligan, Richard Case, and colorist Daniel Vozzo bring their distinct Vertigo sensibility to this arc, and if Fegredo's painted cover is any indication, "The Alligator People" leans hard into the beautifully weird.
