Shade, the Changing Man #55

By issue #55, Peter Milligan, Mark Buckingham, and Rick Bryant's Vertigo series was pushing its psychedelic premise to strange, compelling places — and Duncan Fegredo's cover captures that spirit perfectly. Shade himself appears suspended or falling through a swirling, organic void of black-and-white amoebic shapes, his patterned jacket dissolving into the madness around him while bursts of vivid color flicker at the edges, suggesting reality coming apart at the seams.
