Peter Milligan kicks off "The Curse of the Constantines" with this striking 2012 Vertigo entry, featuring a cover by Simon Bisley that pulls no punches — a bloodied, cigarette-dangling John Constantine grins with unsettling calm in the foreground while riot police clash with protesters in a chaotic street scene behind him. That contrast between Constantine's cool detachment and the violence erupting at his back sets a perfectly ominous tone for Part One of what promises to be a dark new chapter for DC's most morally complicated occultist.
