Shade, the Changing Man #41

Peter Milligan and Glyn Dillon's Shade, the Changing Man continues its beautifully strange run with issue #41, subtitled "Pygmalion Fever" on this striking Chris Bachalo cover. The image says it all: a bare-shouldered Shade gazes tenderly at a classical marble statue draped in flowing robes, cradling it close against a cheerful daisy-dotted background — a cigarette even perched at the statue's lips, blurring the line between the animate and the stone-cold still. It's the kind of quietly surreal, emotionally charged imagery that made this DC Vertigo series one of 1993's most distinctive reads.
